Unlike so many other seasons, we don't have any more Heartland Owners Club rallies to attend. We have an upcoming Camp-Out planned for April 25th-May2nd this spring. We will likely host one last Rally next year (2023) but haven't planned any dates yet. Stay tuned!

I have suffered from a bad back, likely caused by 34 years of wearing a gunbelt and gear. I had X-rays taken of my back several years ago with a diagnosis of my L4 and L5 vertebrae being and apparently causing irritation to the nerves running through them, affecting my legs and hips. It caused great pain in the muscles in my thighs, somewhat relieved by various medications and anti inflammatory pain mediations. I have taken myself off the pain meds out of a fear of addiction but plan to seek a medical expert's advice when I return home.

With our season coming to an end, it is time to return to Dickinson. We began the packing on Wednesday. With a lot of help from friends we got the porch taken down and packed up for travel.

Thursday morning I began the last part of the outside work, finishing up the outside decorations and accessories before doing the utilities. Again with help from my friends to help with the painful chores. It was much slower than normal, but we got it done! We didn't actually leave until about 11 AM but we only have about 230 miles to travel today.

We saw more Texas Highway Patrol Troopers today than I have ever seen in one area. We traveled north on the 281 highway and there was a Trooper at every crossover. The Border Patrol was also active, having a U Haul truck stopped with several men in custody along the highway. The Border Patrol checkpoints have become a mere slowdown, with only one agent to check us as we came through. I guess the dogs and handlers are needed somewhere else?

We made the obligatory stop at the rest area just after the checkpoint. I've often wondered if the placement of the checkpoint only a couple of miles before the rest area is on purpose. Perhaps some people need to use the facilities after contacting the Border Patrol and Customs personnel?? They weren't interested in us, so we continued on toward Victoria, our overnight destination. We made another pitstop for coffee (me) and a cold soda for Stella. This had to be the largest Love's Truck Stop in the world! I parked far out from the truckers, to stay out of their way but we had to walk about a half-mile out from the building. This was measured by Stella's phone.

We made it into the Gateway to the Gulf RV Park where we had an uneventful night. This little park has gone down in the past few years. A piece of 2X4 covers the sewer connection on the site we were on. The park used to have decent Internet service, but no more. Just little things are the problems.

We pulled out late, so as to avoid the rush-hour traffic in Houston. It worked! We breezed through without slowing down, which was planned. We arrived here a bit after 2PM and had a pretty easy setup. Well do the porch tomorrow, as it requires a lot of bending and stooping.

I was tired from two days' driving and the pack up and setup, so I slept very well. We spoke with brother Phil and his wife Carol and made a date to meet for breakfast. We ended up at the Los Ramirez in Dickinson for a delicious Mexican breakfast.

It's good to be back!

So long.
Jayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08010844018579491302noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1109964763519165538.post-420511121142896132022-03-26T12:50:00.000-07:002022-03-26T12:50:47.294-07:00Wednesday March 23, 2022
I have been asked by several friends to start blogging again, so here goes. Today's entry will give a bit of "catchup" to what we have been doing.

Soon after retirement, we began spending the winter in the Rio Grande Valley. We bounced around between several RV parks until we found one that we liked. We thought we had found one, Cottonwood RV Park because of the price, only $250 per month + electricity. Several of our friends also stayed there, but after 4 years, I got tired of having nothing to do in the park. It was a good place to stay with friends, but there were no activities in the park, so in 2020 I found a place called Los Ebanos in Mission Tx. They offered a first-timer a special of paying for two days, with two extra days free, plenty of time to decide if we liked the park. When we arrived, everyone was very friendly and we knew we had found "the place to call home for the winter". We went ahead and notified our friends and the owner of Cottonwood that we had found a new park. The two parks are only 3 or 4 miles apart, so we can visit often.

The 2020 season flew by and we returned to Split Rail in 2021 and we persuaded our friends Norm and Tammy Boyce to join us here. Norm had an EZ Up shelter that he set up behind his trailer (next to us) that we used for a meeting place for us to use. We had a great season with them and made plans for the next year's season with even more Heartlanders staying here.

Split Rail has an Entertainment Association setup in place to control all facets of entertainment from professional groups, to local jam sessions and the different activities in the park for the enjoyment of the guests in the park. The association has an elected board and I learned that there was a vacancy in the Vice President slot. I met the President, Bob Pirtle, about running for the office and he told me to go for it. I signed up and got elected! I intended to use the skills that I had learned from 14 years with the Heartland Owners Club, 5 years as South Texas Chapter Leader and 2 years as Regional Director of the Central region of the United States and 7 years as Regional Director of the South Central region, consisting of the states of Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas and Louisiana.

The 2022 season was our best one yet! We had recruited several new Heartland owners to stay at Split Rail. We were joined by Gene and Molly Coker Marc and Tammy Tubbs as well as former Heartlanders and now Tiffin motorhome owners Craig and Teena Burton, so we had an outstanding winter with our friends. Marc and Tammy had an EZ Up that they attached to Norm and Tammy's so we had a very nice meeting place which we affectionally named "The Outhouse". Norm and Marc added some side panels which blocked the relentless Rio Grande Valley winds and with the addition of two propane heaters, gave us a snug and warm shelter, which we used daily for Happy Hour and several meals.

Upon being elected Vice President of the Association, I learned that it meant a 3 year commitment, one year as Vice President, Promotion to President the next year and then one year as a Director. Since this is my year as VP, I asked Norm if he would run for my slot after my automatic promotion to President. He agreed to run and was elected. Now the fun really begins. We have some plans and ideas to help the park and can't wait to begin putting them into place. Wish us luck!

So long.
Jayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08010844018579491302noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1109964763519165538.post-74064444678356141062019-03-19T07:28:00.002-07:002019-03-19T07:28:58.544-07:00March 18, 2019-Moving Day-Whistle Stop Resort to Tyler Oaks Resort, Tyler Tx.We were up early to pack up and leave Abilene after the rally. We had a great time here, meeting some new friends and reacquainting with others, as well as seeing our usual friends that go to most of the Heartland rallies.

Stella had done a good job inside, with many of the normal things that are laying around being put away. We had our normal coffee and a light breakfast of a blueberry muffin and got busy.

My friend Mike Culpepper and I had re-positioned my water filter into the water control cabinet while we were here and it was a joy to simply unplug the water hose from the quick-connect on the filter without having to stow the filter in the box. Another simplification project completed!

We weren't traveling with anyone else on this trip and were glad when Stella took her normal medications today including a diuretic that caused us to stop frequently. We stopped at the first rest stop we came to, about 10 miles down the road as a precaution for her, the first of about 5 stops we made. I'm not complaining because it keeps her feeling better and that is a good thing.

We made good time, even though we ran into a good bit of traffic in the Fort Worth and Dallas areas. It was only a 280 mile day, so we were here in Tyler before 4. This is our third time here in about five months, and I asked for frequent flier miles when we checked in. That got a chuckle out of Whitney, owner of the park, but no discount was offered.

We went over to Aunt Janie's house for supper and a nice visit. We are looking forward to spending more time with her this week, as well as her daughter Linda, my cousin. Should be a good week.

Together, we cooked up a Facebook page for our senior class at Ball High School in Galveston and titled it "Ball High Class of 65 and Still Alive". At that time, she told me that she and her husband live in Abilene, which we had just left for their rally. I told her that we would stay in touch and the next time we came to Abilene, we would get together.

Today was that day! We decided to meet at Heff's Burgers. She had made a great suggestion and the sandwiches we ordered were great! We managed to get a table near the back of the restaurant and spent about 3 hours visiting and reminiscing about our class. Our class was a large one, though not as large as today's classes, but pretty big. It was interesting to compare our class to Stella's class of about 30. At any rate, we had a very nice time meeting her before returning to our park, just in time for happy hour, which we have every afternoon around 5.

Our happy hour group is getting larger every day, and is always fun. We have a couple of drinks and sit around chatting and telling stories of our travels. It's a few days until the rally starts and it keeps us together. Rallies are so much fun!
There is a barbecue cook-off scheduled for Saturday but it was better with less people.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">We got there about 9:30am and were glad to see that there weren't too many people there yet. This event was held at the fairgrounds, with the snake exhibits being in large circular pits with 5' high sides and Plexiglas windows in the walls for children to view the snakes and the men inside. The snake handlers are all members of the Sweetwater Jaycees and they did a good job with the snakes.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">We saw one man that demonstrated the lightning-quick strikes by hanging a balloon in front of a large rattler and inviting him to bite it, which he did in very short order. We saw another booth that "milked" the snakes of their venom. The venom is used to make anti-venom for snakebite victims and probably saves many lives. Another display was the cleaning and processing the snakes after death. (all of the captured snakes are put down) It was interesting to note how skinny the bodies are after removing their skin. When the "innards" are removed, it was demonstrated that the snake hearts continue beating for up to 20-25 minutes after removal. The skins and rattles are kept for stuffing and sale.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">There was a huge number of stuffed snakes in different poses. They are imposing and frightening to many including me. I have always had a revulsion to snakes and although I had several run-ins with snakes in my career, I never had a personal experience with them, to my happiness. One of the handlers came around the circle with a 4' rattler that he allowed anyone wishing to, to touch the snake. I did touch it as well as the rattles that were rattling loudly. I must say that it was unnerving to touch the thing!
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">It should be noted that even thought hundreds of snakes died this weekend, they reproduce very fast. Anywhere from 15-25 babies are born at a time, so it doesn't take long to replenish their numbers.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Last but not least, we ate some fried rattler. Debbie bought a plate of 8-10 pieces of friend meat, which turned out to be mostly bone and ribs. Only small strips of meat were found and like many people have said, it does taste like chicken.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">We all bought tee shirts to commemorate our visit to the roundup. It is something that was on our bucket list and we are all happy that we came.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

I just needed some time off but now feel like writing again.

After spending some time in the Rio Grande Valley in Mission, it is finally time to leave. The rally season is starting, so we need to hit the road. We left on Wednesday and after an overnight stop, at the Whistle Stop resort in Abilene.

We traveled with Dave and Nancy & Lin and Debbie. For a change, Dave led the pack! He did really well, even when traveling through San Antonio, which is always a white-knuckle drive. We left right on time, at 9AM and made very good time. We only stopped once, near the Border Patrol checkpoint near Falfurias. We arrived in Boerne at the Top 'O the Hill RV Park about 3PM.

We had a couple of close calls when entering the park to get to our site. The streets are very narrow with a tree on my right side and a pole in our site on my left. I had to cut pretty close to the tree and when I went back to look at my track, I saw that I had only been about a foot from the tree and had been even closer to the pole but we made it. We found that our Traveler antenna had a problem. The controller said that there was no power to the LNB, the signal receiver. Since I'm not allowed to go on the roof any more, we just did without TV overnight. It wasn't too bad without it and I got some reading done. We had no further problems in our site but Dave and Nancy had no 50 amp service and had to use 30 amp, which meant that they had limited electricity to use. We earned that Lin had been sick from some food that he ate in Mexico, so we didn't see him while we were there.

We did get to see our old friend Ricky Cobb, who lives in this park. I walked the dogs and stopped by to see him and he later came down to our place for a visit. It was good to see him again.

We left Thursday morning about 8:45 with no further problems. I led on this trip, which was uneventful. We stopped at a truck stop for our break and made it to Abilene about 3.

After getting parked, I checked the rooftop antenna and could see a wire that had come loose. I asked one of the park workers if he would go up and plug the wire back in and he agreed to. He found that the wire had apparently broken off from the base of the antenna and tried to tape it back together but it didn't work. When Dave finished with his setting up their trailer, I asked him to see what he could do to repair this problem. He was able to push the wire back into the connection and made it work for a temporary fix. At least we will have television!

Our good friends Mike and Peg had arrived here from their home in San Angelo. They had prepared a delicious meal for all of us travelers of ham and scalloped potatoes. It was delicious and we thank them for thinking about us. Lin was still under the weather and couldn't eat.

The weather had turned off cold and rainy when we arrived, so we weren't able to sit or eat outside with our friends, so we all got a plateful and came back home to eat.

We are expecting to have a great week here in Abilene with both old friends and new at this rally. Of course, we are going to the Rattlesnake Roundup tomorrow, so stay tuned for that report.
Not only did we fight the rain, we had gusty winds to deal with as well. It certainly effected the fuel mileage today! Yesterday, coming down out of the mountains, we made very good mileage, showing almost 13 miles per gallon but today was much worse, around 8-9 mpg.

It was pouring rain when we arrived and it didn't take me long to get soaked while I got the water and electricity set up. I came inside and saw some water on the floor from an apparent leak around the kitchen slide, but it was dried up quickly. I added a small puddle where I was standing, but it too dried up well.

Our friends, Tony and Erika were coming in from Cisco, where they live, and told us to do our own thing for supper since they would be later arriving, so we ate in and relaxed until they arrived. They got here a little after 7, and after hugs and handshakes, we again split up, then to get something to eat and us to stay inside, out of the never-ending rain!

It had been a long trip, in the rain, but we were glad to be here spending time with friends.

I got used to cool temperatures every night and nice temps during the days with no humidity! I seldom broke a sweat and when I did, it dried up quickly. I got used to great weather for walking down a pretty little trail beside a nice creek (Oxbow creek) and for the last couple of months, I've been walking 5 miles a day. I probably won't be able to do those distances when I get back to Texas, but I'll keep up the exercises.

Today's trip began right about on time, with us pulling out about 10 o'clock. Not too bad for almost no work getting done yesterday. We spent most of yesterday getting the truck out of the shop at the Town and Country Auto dealership in Alamosa. The truck had developed a serious oil leak and when we took it in, they diagnosed the problem as a rear main oil seal leaking. That required an overnight stay in the shop for the truck, but they gave us a loaner car, so we were not afoot. After keeping the truck for an extra day because of a lack of parts, we got it back yesterday and it runs like a new one now!

Back to the story of today's travels. We made a couple of short stops, soon after leaving. The first was to completely close the door-side slide, which had accidentally been left slightly ajar. No problem, but we did have to pull over to close it. We then made a routine "pit stop" at a small rest area outside of South Fork Colorado. Our last stop was at a large rest area outside of Trinidad Colorado. We have been here before and it is a handy stop for us and the dogs!

It began to rain on us soon after the final stop and it continued all the way across New Mexico. We made good time and arrived here at Dalhart about 5:30. Remember, we lost an hour when we got into Texas and the Central time zone. In no time at all, we were checked in and set up for an overnight stay, just as it began to rain in earnest. I will add some pictures when the Internet is better.
This campground offers campsites with fire ring and parking for an RV. No utilities are offered, but the meadow-like area is beautiful with a nice lake that is stocked with fish. A boat ramp is nearby as well as ample places to fish off the bank.

Our other friends from Mountain View came up today to fish. Pam and Merle own a lot at Mountain View and are avid fishermen/woman. They have fished at several of the local lakes. Joe and Jan are also good at fishing but don't go as often. They all had a good day today, catching 10 fish together. They will have a nice fish fry.

Later tonight, we went with Pam and Merle to the Elks Lodge here in the park. This is the building where we have church services on Sunday, for a performance by Pauline Reese. She is a singer of some note, having been nominated for a Grammy award as was her accompanying guitar player. None of us were impressed with her "performance" and we left the show early. She was about 45 minutes late to begin with, and incessantly talked before each song that she sang. Three of the four songs that we heard were her own writing and her singing of "the Red River Valley" was nothing out of the ordinary.

There is a festival today in town that Ms. Reese is a part of, but we decided after last night not to go. I am writing this in the afternoon and it has been raining for about 30 minutes, so, unfortunately for the festival, they are getting rained out. Perhaps they will organize another one next year. We'll see...
Today we took a drive over to the Blue Spruce RV Park in Bayfield CO. We used to come to this park every summer for about 8-9 years and we last came here in 2000 with our friends Mike and Patrice.

I suppose we didn't watch as much television then as we do now because the trees completely block out any television reception. The park does offer to rent Direct TV receivers and they have antennas placed in the park to receive this signal, but we don't want to pay for another service. Bummer, as I would have loved to come back here for a stay.

The park has not changed too much since we've been here, except for ownership. We were able to find the sites that we stayed in, the interior park roads haven't changed at all, and we both noted that with this larger trailer, we might have trouble getting in and set up.
This is the gated entrance to the Wits End Ranch, a once-thriving high dollar resort that featured individual cabins, most with fireplaces and beautiful grounds. They had a chef on staff to prepare gourmet food for guests and lots of activities at the park. One time, when we came up for a vacation, Land Rover, an auto manufacturer, rented the entire resort for their dealers to attend a sales conference. It was a huge deal for the area, with a large fleet of new-model Land Rovers that were loaned to the people at the conference.
We also noted some other sorrowful sights in the area. The Missionary Ridge fire in June-July of 2002 burned over 70,000 acres, leaving huge areas without trees. It had to be terrifying to the residents in homes to see a huge fire literally across the street from their homes. I couldn't stop to take photos of the burned out areas due to traffic and a lack of a shoulder to pull over. I didn't see any burned-out houses although there were probably some that were destroyed.

This is really a beautiful area to visit, especially Durango with it's tourist attractions. It is near the four corners area, Mesa Verde Indian National Park and of course, the Durango-Silverton narrow-gauge train.

We'll continue to make some scenic drives and will be sure to take photos. Please stay tuned!
Today we took a drive up Pool Table mountain, just outside of Creede with our neighbors Joe and Jan. This is a beautiful drive of about 10-15 miles up to a flat plateau that once houses the site of Hansom's Sawmill. Only a large pile of sawdust remains at the site of the mill.

Today we made a drive over to Lake City with our neighbors Joe and Jan. It was a beautiful drive, as all drives in this area of Colorado are. The drive over was uneventful but it began to rain shortly before we got to town. We decided to eat at the Packer Saloon and Cannibal Grill in Lake City for lunch. The ran had slacked up and we decided to eat outside. The weather was nice, cool with little wind, but just as we finished our sandwiches it started to rain again.

We walked around the downtown area for awhile after the rains let up some. We stopped in the Russ Brown Gallery. He was a helicopter pilot in Vietnam and now does paintings of military aircraft as well as nature, autos and portraits. He is very talented and worth a look the next time you are in town.

We drove back toward Creede but turned off near the top of the Slumgullion Pass (elevation 11,530) where we turned off toward Deer Lake in search of sighting some moose and other wildlife. We drove about 4 miles to the lake but the weather did not cooperate and it continued to rain. When we got to the lake, we walked a short distance to a viewing area where Stella and I have seen moose in the past, but they were apparently laying down someplace warm and dry and we didn't get to see any today. The rain and lightning made us leave after a very short time.

We did see a mule deer doe with her fawn as we drove out, but she didn't stay around long enough for me to get a picture of her. We did notice a solitary small trailer off to the side of the road as we came in. As we left we noticed some animals across a valley that were apparently grazing. There was a large group of them, so I took some photos. I assume that the trailer belongs to the sheep herder but we never saw anyone around the sheep or the trailer.

Today is the 4th of July-Happy Birthday U.S.A.!-and we knew that there is a big parade in downtown Creede. We left at 9:15 for a 10 o'clock start of the parade and couldn't believe how many people were already there. The downtown area where the parade was to start was already blocked off and packed and parking was already spilling over onto the highway leading into town, so we gave up and went for a ride on our own.

We drove west out of town to the road leading to Middle Creek Rd. and Lime Creek Rd. for today's drive.

There was a lot of traffic on this road today. I guess others had the same thoughts as we did, getting out and seeing the sights of the area.
A group on some side-by-sides was also on the top at the time we were there. Well. we've been here for a week, but it's been an uneventful week. We rested all week because we were EXHAUSTED from making the drive from Elkhart Indiana. This will be our home for the next few months and I think we'll enjoy it.

What I did for these pictures was to stand in one place and take photos in a 360* circle, to try to show you the mountaintop views all the way around us.

There is another site behind us that is unoccupied at the moment. I feel pretty certain that it will be fill soon, as most of this park is spoken for this summer.

This is the site next door. As I said above, the park will soon be filled, and this site is now occupied by a motor home. I didn't want to be rude and take photos of my neighbors as soon as they arrived, so none yet.

Also note that there is a concrete patio on this site and there is not one on our site. That is one of the reasons we got a deal on our rent, no patio!
To bring you up to date on this week, we went out to eat at a place called Cascada Bar & Grill and Cabins. Cascada, which means Little Waterfall in Spanish is a quirky little bar and grill that was built using parts and pieces of other buildings in Creede and art pieces to decorate the building.

The food was pretty good, but we both had burgers and they were dry. Even with condiments, the meat tasted overcooked and rather tasteless. We may go back, but we probably won't get a burger.

Today, we met our friends Martha and Dana for lunch at the Cottonwood Cove Guest Ranch. This place is great, being a restaurant, gift shop, cabin sales and rentals and an RV Park. I'll be honest, we may come back here some day for a stay! We had a nice lunch and sat, chatting with our friends for an hour or so. The food was very good and we will definitely be back here.

We are looking forward to a fun-filled summer in Creede. Please stay tuned!
This is a nice little park that was perfect for our overnight stay, but we stayed here three years ago with Dave & Nancy and Tom & Marti for a few days to explore the area and it worked well for us.

We actually pulled out about 8:30 and had another uneventful day of driving in western Kansas and eastern Colorado. We went through Lamar Colorado, where we stopped with Dave & Nancy after his truck broke down.It actually blew off a turbo hose that he found at the Ford dealership there. Dave bought the part and installed it and we were back on the road the next day. Lucky...

I've gotta tell you that I don't usually complain about highways but I am on this occasion. We traveled about 25 miles on I-25 and I can't think of another time that a major interstate highway was in such bad shape! The Colorado Department of Transportation should be ashamed! We found cabinets thrown open and the contents scattered on the floor and food thrown out of their cabinets. Be very careful traveling I-25 south bound at Pueblo.

We rolled into the KOA about 3 o'clock and were soon set up in our site. I had to ask for another site because they had put us into a heavily wooded site and I couldn't get out on the rooftop antenna. Gotta have TV!

Tomorrow is our last travel, thank goodness! I am tired and wanting to be somewhere that I can rest and relax. so don't expect to hear much from me for a few days. At least today will be a short 160 mile day but it's in the mountains, so that will slow us down. Can't wait to arrive!
We were up and on the road a few minutes after 9, even taking time to fill up with fuel at a Flying J service station, where fuel was a good price, so we took advantage. Stella found some "new" sandwiches, a sausage and egg and bacon and egg, both of them on French toast bread. Mine was just okay, but it was a good experiment.

We only made two pit stops again, the first at a rest stop in Kansas and the second at a very small truck stop out in the boonies. We did take time out to let the dogs out alongside the highway. We found a place where the grass had been mowed, and took them out for their own little break.

The only interesting things that happened today was that we saw a bull in a pasture that had the largest horns we've ever seen. It was a longhorn bull and it was not the length of the horns but the diameter. Those things had to be 6 or 8 inches around!

The other interesting thing was that we got stuck behind a big truck carrying a load of round bale hay. He must have had 10 or more bales on his truck but he managed to drive at a decent speed, so I just stayed behind him. He was being followed by a couple of cars that refused to pass him and a motorhome that did find a long enough stretch to pass this group of cars and truck. He has more guts than I do, to pass this group with fairly heavy traffic. I must have had to follow him for 40 miles or so before he finally turned off. Then, when we got here to the Gunsmoke, the motorhome that passed was here ahead of us! I went by to talk to those folks but they were gone somewhere.

We did find some Shell diesel fuel at a great price here, so we filled up again. this will give us plenty of fuel for our stay in Creede.

Just one more overnight stop!

So long.Jayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08010844018579491302noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1109964763519165538.post-23968564704133452782018-05-30T06:01:00.000-07:002018-05-30T06:01:03.362-07:00Tuesday May 29, 2018-Moving Day-Double J Campground to Peculiar Park Place Resort, Peculiar MOWe made an uneventful drive from Chatham Illinois to Peculiar Missouri. We pulled out about 9:30 and made very good time on the freeway. We had freeway driving all day and it was a nice trip.

We only made two pit stops today (hooray for Stella!), the first in a rest area, which we always like to do, and the second at a large truck stop where we picked up a couple of sandwiches. I love truck stop burritos, but haven't been able to find any recently. Rest assured, I'll keep looking!

We saw a large coyote loping down the road. He got near us and turned off out into the pasture and his normal running grounds. This is the first time we've actually seen a coyote in the wild, not counting carcasses on the shoulder of the road. Nice...

We crossed the Mississippi river at Hannibal Missouri, home of Mark Twain. We should plan a trip here to explore this area sometime. I never really thought about it until now.

It was rather confusing when we got to the Kansas City area. I knew we were in Missouri, but all of a sudden I saw a large Welcome to Kansas sign along side the road. Then, a few miles down the road, we saw another welcome (back) to Missouri. I knew the park has a Missouri address and we have been this way before, but I guess it never hit me that we went through Kansas in ten minutes!

We pulled in here and were soon checked in and escorted to out site. In no time at all we were hooked up. This site (#58) is very unlevel and we ended up with three tires off the ground, but there was no rocking, so all is well.

The trip will continue tomorrow, please stay tuned.
I tried the Facebook thing and didn't like it, so here I am, back "home".

I woke about 6:30 to begin getting ready to leave. Stella had already gotten up and had the coffee brewing and was busy packing stuff away. We had a quick breakfast and the packing began in earnest.

We took our time and were ready to go a little after 9 and it didn't take long to get back on the Indiana Toll road, and we were off! We made good time, with light traffic, and made our first pit stop on the toll road at one of their very convenient "service plazas" that are about 30 miles apart. They are so nice and I wish Texas would do something similar with our rest stops. It could be done easily, by selling or leasing some land to a convenience store/fast food restaurant for snacks and soft drinks for hungry and thirsty travelers.

We made another stop at a run-down service station/truck stop on I-55. It was laid out funny and we had to park out in a separate lot with the big rigs and walk a long way to get into the store to use the rest rooms. We decided to pick up something to eat while we were there and bought a couple of sandwiches to eat in the truck. It turned out that we only got one sandwich that was really thick, so we ended up with a half sandwich each but they were very tasty.

We ran into some rain along the highway. The clouds rolled up and I could see the rain in front of us, but by the time we reached the storm, it had broken up a bit. We still got some ran but it wasn't too bad after all.

We had no further incidents and pulled into the Double J Campground about 3:30 Central time. Don't forget that we had been on Eastern time while we were in Elkhart!

This is just the first stop in a four stop week of traveling to Creede Colorado.

So long.Jayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08010844018579491302noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1109964763519165538.post-5035982188291528012018-05-27T09:40:00.000-07:002018-05-27T09:40:04.302-07:00Sunday May 27, 2018-Elkhart CampgroundI want to begin with yesterday. We took our new friends Chuck and Gayle over to Wakarusa IN and the Wakarusa Dime Store. First, the name Wakarusa. The actual source of the name is unknown. It was first traditionally believed to be from a Native American tribe, with its meaning "knee deep in mud". A more recent source claims a settler named it after a location in Kansas. At any rate, it's a beautiful little town with huge, beautiful trees hanging over the streets.

We had a good time shopping the nostalgic little Dime Store, trying to keep ourselves from buying one of each item in the store. Many brought back memories of our childhood but some were newer items that looked delicious.

We ended up on a scenic drive through Amish country, ending up in Goshen, where Chuck wanted to take a look at the Elkhart County 4H Fairgrounds for future reference for a rally. Since we have been there several times, we were glad to show them around.

This was a good way to end out time in Elkhart on a positive note. The RVillage rally had left us with a bitter taste.

We are leaving Monday for a 4 night-stop trip to Creede Colorado. Please stay tuned.

So long.Jayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08010844018579491302noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1109964763519165538.post-70067525049416286912018-05-24T10:10:00.000-07:002018-05-24T10:10:13.093-07:00

First of all, I want to say, I'm Baaaack!

I tried the experiment with a Facebook page and wasn't satisfied with the response, so I decided to go back to my blog page.

We attended the RVillage Rally One at the Elkhart Campground in Elkhart Indiana, a park that we have been to several times. We have hosted a couple of rallies here and generally like this park very much. We love the owners, Bob and Gita and appreciate all the hard work that they put in to keep it clean and running properly.

I was interested in attending the first rally for RVillage, a page on the Internet, that I have seen as the "Facebook page for RV'ers" and hoped it would go well. I expected some hiccups on a first timer in large rallies, but nothing like the mess that was created here. We have attended many rallies over the years with the Heartland Owners Club and now appreciate even more the skill and dedication of Jim Beletti and the team that produces the Heartland National rallies.

Since I have a background in rallies, I volunteered to work on the parking crew. I know how important it is to give people a good experience at a rally, and that experience begins with parking. Stella was asked to work in the registration booth and she was glad to help.

The main meeting tent, where the group activities were held, the opening and closing meetings and the huge potluck dinner. Although all of them were late beginning, things went off well.

As you can see, we were near the tent, which made out walk an easy one, but it put us directly in the path of people walking across our lot to get to the tent. It didn't bother me, but the dogs didn't like it one bit!

These are the metal fabricated "Fire-birds" that were a highlight to Curtis, owner of RVillage and producer of this rally. They were very interesting and beautiful when the fires were lit inside them. More pictures to follow.

Here you see a start to the mess that was made of parking people. The rally was over booked, although that was denied. How is it not overbooking when you schedule 240 rigs or so to attend a rally in an RV park that holds 200? I have never seen this many units in any RV park at one time.

More double parking. The first unit to arrive was asked to pull forward as far as possible to allow a shorter unit to park behind it, sharing the pedestal and sewer. One unit was given the 50 amp service and the second was given 30 amp and they shared the sewer.

Some units pulled straight in behind and some were parked at right angles behind.

Luckily, most sites are large enough to accommodate this method of cramming in more units than designed for.
Boon-dockers! In my opinion, these are very fancy and high-priced rigs to be staying at an RV park without basic utilities. Some of these may have volunteered to do this, but Stella and I will never do so. I know that Curtis and some others moved out of their full hookup sites to free them up for others, which was a good thing. At least the weather cooperated and it wasn't very hot.
To elaborate a bit more about the foul-ups at this rally, nothing went as planned, Nothing! Seminars were moved without notice, the rooms were not properly marked, confusion everywhere! We were never given an agenda, but were told to download an app for a smart phone to get one. Those of you that know Stella, know her opinion of smart phones, so she was very upset by not knowing what was going on. She said that in preparing the rally bags for distribution, they started putting an agenda into each bag, but ran out, so instead of making more, they pulled them out and threw them away! I will now stop ranting about this rally, but rest assured, this will be our last one.

On the upside, we met some nice new friends while we were here. We met Chuck and Gail Woodbury, editor of RV Travels.com and a friends of theirs, Dr. Deanna Tolliver, M.S., DVM, who gave a good seminar on traveling with pets. Dr. Deanna also writes a column on RV Travels. I have already added a free subscription to RV Travels and find it helpful and interesting.

We also met Steve and Diane, whom I told you about earlier, and fellow parking crew members Dave and Staci from Washington state. We met neighbors Tom and Cheryl, who are fairly new to full timing and were first-time rally-goers. There were many more acquaintances that were here.

All in all, I made a mistake in attending this rally and own it, but it was still a good experience and I will continue to stay in touch with the friends I have made.

I am also going to welcome myself back to this blog. I'm going to keep it up better through the summer in Colorado, where we will be traveling next week.
So long.Jayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08010844018579491302noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1109964763519165538.post-13500771116186060422018-04-01T16:25:00.000-07:002018-04-01T16:25:00.544-07:00Sunday April 1, 2018After almost 10 years of blogging I have decided that I get too far behind and want to try using Facebook. I have set up a page there with the name Jay and Stella's adventures and will try that for awhile.

Please bear with me while I attempt this. There should be more opportunities to post pictures as well as text to let you know where we are and what we are doing.

Thanks for all your love and support.
