Tuesday July 19, 2011-Mackinaw Mill Creek Campground

Today we took a boat ride to Macinac Island. It's a beautiful ride of about 7 miles across the Mackinac (Mackinaw) strait but it was not as nice today because it was extremely foggy. I guess the extreme heat wave that is here caused fog this morning. We were scheduled to go under the big bridge this morning but couldn't because of the limited visibility.

We walked around the "downtown" area of the island that consisted of restaurants and snack food stands and lots and lots of tee shirt and tourist trinket stores. We walked by one of the carriage ride ticket booths but the line was all the way out to the street, so we decided to wait. We walked down the street to the Fort Holmes and toured it. It is a very interesting place and we saw some reenactments of events that occurred at the fort. I noticed that the young men that were acting as the soldiers wore period costumes, even down to their jewelry. One of them used a pocketwatch rather than a modern wristwatch. None carried cell phones or radios that I could see and actually put on a very good show.

After a tiring walk up the hill to the fort and around the grounds, we decided to again try the carriage ride but learned that there was almost an hour and a half wait for another tour, and the tour took about two hours, so we decided to skip it. We had been there for over four hours and I had used a pedometer app on my I-Phone to measure how far we had walked. My phone battery died at about three miles, so we were done walking. We went back to the boat and made another nice ride back to Mackinaw City. We stopped at one of the local restaurants to eat before we headed back home. It was another good time here in Michigan, even though it was very hot.

So long.
